BMW ALPINA B4 Bi-Turbo COUPÉ

The design of the Coupé successfully blends powerful sportiness and elegant beauty in one flowing form. The low, extended silhouette of the Coupé is just perfect for the ALPINA CLASSIC wheels. The timeless design with twenty spokes and concealed inner valve give the Coupé a light and dynamic appearance. The oval twin tailpipes of the exhaust system are particularly distinctive and are attractively integrated into the rear apron. The Coupé accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.2 seconds, reaching a top speed of 303 km/h. At the same time it is capable of economical cruising with a combined fuel consumption according to the ECE norm of just 7.6 l/100 km and 177 g/km CO2. This exceptional performance is also available with all-wheel drive based on the BMW xDrive system which offers maximum traction and dynamics in all conditions.

Powertrain

The 2979 cm³ straight-six cylinder engine with direct fuel injection and Bi-Turbo charging produces an impressive 301 kW (410 hp) between 5500 and 6250 rpm and delivers a maximum torque of 600 Nm at 3000 rpm. This enormous pulling power combined with the excellently matched 8-speed sport automatic transmission means that engine response is instantaneous and effortless at all times – a central ingredient for the ALPINA typical driving experience. A prerequisite for this is the concept of twin turbocharging. This offers the advantage of fast response due to a low mass inertia of the turbochargers (as opposed to a single, large turbocharger) while at the same time allowing for the necessary air throughput required for maximum power output. Engine response and power delivery is sharpened even further by an electronically controlled by-pass valve system. Specially designed and dethrottled induction ducts guide the air with minimum losses from the air intake via the air filter housing to the turbochargers. Optimal utilisation of the power potential is guaranteed by a high-performance cooling package including large-volume intercooler with flow-optimised boxes made from aluminium. Specific NGK spark plugs as well as a forged steel crankshaft are among the internal engine measures incorporated in the specially cast aluminium crankcase. The engine, equipped with Auto Start Stop function and fully variable valve timing, has a combined fuel consumption in accordance with the ECE norm of only 7.6 to 8.0 l/100 km and emissions of 177 to 186 g/km CO2, depending on model.

Exhaust System

The construction and design of the stainless steel exhaust system, developed in cooperation with Akrapovič, guarantees an elegant look and a very emotional soundtrack. The silencer volume is reduced to a minimum in order to optimise the flow of exhaust gases and to save weight – along with other measures the intended result is also a powerful, baritone sound. An intelligent exhaust valve makes it possible to successfully achieve the balancing act between audible pleasure and long-distance comfort. The exhaust valve is closed when the Dynamic Performance Control is set to Comfort mode and opens depending on load and engine speed. In contrast, it is permanently open in Sport mode, generating an exciting sound experience especially under acceleration.

Transmission

The 8-speed sport automatic transmission has been explicitly adapted in cooperation with ZF for the requirements of BMW ALPINA automobiles and offers exemplary shift comfort with a pronounced sporty characteristic.

The adapted mechatronics and a special torque converter ensure that the high power output is transmitted with maximum efficiency and comfort to the driven wheels.

ALPINA SWITCH-TRONIC is not just the description for the traditional shift buttons on the back of the steering wheel, but also means that the transmission software is explicitly tailored for every drivetrain type.

The 8-speed sport automatic transmission combined with ALPINA typical high torque output at low engine speeds allows effortless, relaxed and economical driving in high gears and outstanding cruising comfort on long journeys. Simultaneously the hardware design of the transmission does not require any significant reduction in torque when changing gear and allows for impressively dynamic and very fast gear changes under full load. As such the transmission plays a crucial role in facilitating very quick acceleration during dynamic driving but also plays an important part in reducing fuel consumption thanks to BMW Efficient Dynamics Technologies such as the ECO PRO mode as well as the Auto Start Stop function.

Transmission – Modes

The 8-speed sport automatic transmission with SWITCH-TRONIC offers three modes of operation to suit any driving situation.

Automatic Mode is configured with a clear focus on driving comfort. In this mode gear shifts are performed rapidly and smoothly, without any noticeable interruption in power delivery and in perfect harmony with the powerful, high-torque engines.

Sport Mode is decidedly more lively and dynamic – the shift points are at higher rpm and shift times are significantly faster.

In Manual Mode all relevant parameters are configured for pronounced dynamics and gear changes are performed exclusively using the shift buttons on the rear of the steering wheel. In this mode gear changes are super fast and take just a fraction of second. The currently selected gear is displayed in the instrument cluster. Automatic upshifts can be suppressed in combination with the Dynamic Performance Control setting Sport+ or DSC Off.
